Woodworking Plans vs. Designing Your Own
A tested plan and a custom design solve different problems. Neither is the "right" answer in every case — the better question is which one fits the specific project, budget, and space you are working with.
Where a tested plan wins
- Lumber cost: a checked cut list has already been nested for minimal waste, which a first custom design usually has not.
- Structural load: shelving, benches, and anything load-bearing benefits from joinery and spans that have already been built and tested.
- Time: skipping the design phase means more time at the saw and less at the drawing table.
- First attempts at a new joint or technique: learning dovetails or mortise-and-tenon is easier against a plan that has already solved the layout problem.
Where designing your own wins
- Non-standard spaces: a shelf or cabinet built to fit an exact alcove will always beat a generic plan resized after the fact.
- Reused or reclaimed material: odd board widths and lengths from reclaimed lumber rarely match a plan's cut list.
- Personal fit: bench and table heights, in particular, benefit from being sized to the people using them.
- Once you already know the joinery: designing from scratch is far easier once you have built the same joint type from a plan at least once.
A practical middle path
Most experienced builders do not fully commit to one approach. A common pattern is to start from a tested plan and then adjust the dimensions — height, depth, or shelf count — while keeping the plan's joinery and cut-list logic intact. This keeps the structural and lumber-efficiency benefits of a tested design while still fitting your specific space.
