How to Read Woodworking Plans and Cut Lists Like a Pro

A plan only saves you money and time if you read it correctly before the first cut. Most wasted lumber does not come from a bad saw cut — it comes from a plan that was misread at the start. This guide covers the five things to check on any woodworking plan, whether it came from a paid library or a free forum post.

1. Nominal size vs. actual size

Lumber is sold by its nominal size, not its actual milled size. A "2x4" is actually 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches once it has been planed at the mill. A "1x6" is 0.75 inches by 5.5 inches. If a cut list gives you dimensions and you assume the nominal size is the real size, every joint in the project will be off by a quarter inch or more. Check the plan's material key for whether its measurements are nominal or actual before you cut a single board.

2. Board nesting and cut order

A cut list is only as efficient as its nesting diagram — the layout that shows how each piece fits onto a standard 8-foot or 10-foot board. A good plan groups cuts by length first, so you are not left with a full board's worth of unusable offcuts. Before you buy lumber, lay the cut list against the board lengths sold at your supplier and check that the math works with minimal waste.

3. Grain direction and orientation marks

Cut lists that only give length and width, with no grain direction, are a warning sign. Grain direction affects strength, how a joint holds glue, and how the piece looks once finished. A complete plan marks grain direction on every structural or visible piece, not just the show faces.

4. The exploded 3D view matches the cut list

Before cutting, count the pieces in the exploded diagram and compare that number to the cut list line items. A mismatch here — more parts in the diagram than on the list, or the reverse — usually means the plan was edited once and not fully checked. Catching this on paper costs nothing; catching it after a cut costs a board.

5. Hardware and fastener specs, not just wood

A cut list without a hardware list is incomplete. Screw length, pocket-hole size, hinge type, and glue type all affect the final joint strength. If a plan lists wood only, assume you will need to make your own hardware decisions, and size fasteners to the actual (not nominal) board thickness from step one.
