Simple Woodworking Projects for the Garage

A garage-friendly project needs to survive a workspace that isn't fully yours: the car may need to come back in, the temperature swings with the seasons, and your tools live in a cart, not a permanent bench. Pick projects and a setup that work around those limits instead of fighting them.

What makes a project garage-friendly

• Portable, not fixed. A project you can carry outside or set aside on a shelf beats one that ties up your only flat surface for a week.
• One power tool, not three. A build that needs just a drill and a circular saw is easier to pack away than one needing a table saw, a router, and a planer.

Working around temperature and humidity

An unheated garage swings in temperature more than an indoor room, and that affects two things directly:

• Glue cure time. Most wood glues need a minimum temperature to cure properly — check the bottle, and don't rely on a quick clamp time in a cold garage.
• Finish drying time. Stains and clear coats dry slower in the cold and can trap moisture in humid conditions, leaving a cloudy or tacky finish.

Move glue-ups and finishing indoors during extreme cold or heat, even if the cutting and assembly happen in the garage.
