Band Saws for Woodworking: What to Look For

A band saw is chosen by its throat depth and resaw height, not by size or price alone. Those two measurements decide which cuts the saw can actually make, and a saw that looks similar in a listing photo can differ from another by inches on both.

What a band saw does that a table saw can't

A band saw's thin, continuous blade cuts curves that a straight table saw blade can't follow, cuts thin slices off a thick board (resawing) with far less waste than a table saw's wider kerf, and cuts safely with far less kickback risk. It's the right tool once a project calls for a curved cut or for splitting a thick board into thinner pieces.

Throat depth and resaw height, explained

Throat depth is the distance from the blade to the frame, which sets the widest board you can cut into from the edge. Resaw height is the maximum distance between the table and the upper blade guide, which sets the tallest board you can stand on edge and rip into thinner slices. Check both against your actual projects, not just the saw's stated size class.

Blade width and tooth count for different cuts

A narrower blade turns tighter curves but wanders more on a straight cut; a wider blade holds a straighter line and is better for resawing but can't follow a tight curve. Tooth count follows the same trade-off as other saws: fewer, larger teeth cut faster and rougher; more, smaller teeth cut slower and cleaner.

Benchtop vs. floor-standing models

Benchtop band saws cost less and store more easily, but usually have less throat depth and resaw height, limiting the size of board you can work with. Floor-standing models cost more and take a fixed spot in the shop, but handle the resaw and curve-cutting jobs a hobby shop is most likely to outgrow a benchtop saw on.
